BUDGET travels and competitive domestic fares now allow more Filipinos to travel around the Philippines. The country is teeming with beautiful tourist spots, fascinating beaches, resorts, and diving sites. But there are many places waiting to be explored.
The government’s “Pilipinas, Tara Na!” campaign calls on Filipinos to first see their own country. The campaign promotes points of interest in the 13 regions of the country, especially those found in Bohol, Palawan, Bicol, and Northern Mindanao, as well as Philippine festivals. Each city and town holds a grand fiesta of its own, usually on the feast of its patron saint. Among the popular festivals are Pahiyas in Quezon, Panagbena in Baguio, Feast of the Black Nazarene in Manila, Sinulog in Cebu, Masskara in Bacolod, Ati-Atihan in Aklan, Dinagyang in Iloilo, and Moriones in Marinduque.
The Department of Tourism is expecting some 25,000 Filipinos to travel locally this year. It is collaborating with local governments, encouraging them to keep their localities clean, safe, orderly, friendly, and peaceful. It is upgrading infrastructures and connecting destinations to make distant tourist spots accessible not just to Filipinos, but to foreign travelers as well.
Tourism is one of the potential growth sectors of the economy. A robust tourism activity contributes to the country’s development, as it will create more jobs and it will help reduce poverty in the countryside. Domestic tourism provides sustainability and stability to destinations especially during off season months.
This year is expected to be more exciting for Filipino travelers. Less travel time, low transportation costs, and upgraded infrastructures and facilities will fuel local tourism growth.
